SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS OF TANZANIA
THE WORLD’S FIRST REGISTERED VCS AFOLU PROJECT
- Validated in July 2009 by TÜV SÜD under the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) using an approved CDM A/R methodology.
- Reforesting 10,814 hectares of degraded grassland with Pine and Eucalyptus 260,000 tCO2e estimated to have been sequestered between 2002 and 2008 with a further 2,873,417 tCO2 anticipated by 2020
- Carbon revenue stream pivotal in ensuring financial viability of project
- Project will generate permanent VERs over a 99 year crediting period guaranteed by a buffer reserve stock
ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNITY BENEFITS
- Validated in 2009 by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, in recognition of the project’s contribution to sustainable development and the environment
- GRL currently employs 280 permanent staff of deferent cadre and between 500-1000 casual workers on temporary basis depending on peak of operations. Most of our work force comes from villages surrounding our projects.
- Investment made in schools, healthcare and infrastructure provision and 10% of all future carbon revenues to be spent on additional community projects
- Silviculture training provided to local communities and community woodlots established through the free distribution of 20% of total seedlings raised
- Project has resulted in extension of infrastructure services including roads, water supply and communications systems, improvement of health facilities and the construction of a local school
- All carbon revenues to be re-invested in Tanzania
- Providing a sustainable timber supply of sawlogs and poles to the East African market
- Using wood waste from the sawmill for generation of renewable energy
